MINUS 30

Winter in Saskatchewan was an important part of my childhood, filled with cherished memories of playing in the snow with my brothers. The experience of deep winter, with its heaviness and silence, also captures the feeling of grief, as those I shared winter with, in this place, are now all gone. In 2021, I began photographing Saskatchewan Blizzards in the extreme conditions of minus 30C or colder. The solitude and pure experience of this atmosphere pushed me inward, creating a respite from everyday life.  When I returned to the landscape of my childhood, where I learned about the fragility of life, I was struck by the environment's own fragility. By capturing winter in photographs, I can preserve and share my memory of this environment, one that my grandchildren may never experience.
